Chapter Two - "The First Storm of Spring"
A young girl is being examined by Black Jack. She had leucoma and needed a cornea transplant. The operation went smoothly and she made a full recovery; her sight perfect again. However, she tells Black Jack that when she closes her eyes she sees the image of a man. Black Jack doesn't like this. feeling that perhaps he made a mistake during the surgery. Two months go by, and the girl whose name is Chiaki, still sees the man everywhere she goes. Her friends do not see him, and she begins to fear she is going crazy, however at the same time, she is finding herself attracted to this phantom man. Black Jack, still uncomfortable by Chiaki's claim goes to see her father who tells him it's all in her head. Black Jack talks with Chiaki and she tells him that she is determined to find the man she keeps envisioning. Suddenly, Black Jack has an idea: the girl underwent a cornea transplant. Perhaps the man she sees was the donnor. He calls the 'eye bank' which informs him that the donnor of the cornea was a woman who was raped and murdered. A horrifying new thought occurs to Black Jack. He goes to a doctor and asks if the human eye can behave like a camera, can the retina be stimulated so violently that it implants an image on the cornea? The doctor is uncertain, but does not say no. Blacj Jack then concludes that the man Chiaki has been seeing is the man who murdered the cornea donnor. He rushes to see Chiaki, who meanwhile has located the man. After talking innocently for a while, the man tackles Chiaki, saying that she knows what he's done. She knows he killed her, so she cannot live. Just then Black Jack arrives, and tackles the man. They fight, and soon thereafter the police arrive. Chiaki is upset the man of her dreams was a killer, and that she could have been next, but her father is greatful Black Jack arrived in time. Black Jack himself is now at ease, and encourages Chiaki to cheer up; her "true spring's about to begin."
